*PREN = Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number: %Cr + 3.3×%Mo + 16×%N (higher = better chloride resistance)

2.1  316L Stainless Steel (Marine-Grade Standard)

Chemical Composition (ASTM A193):

C ≤0.03% | Cr: 16-18% | Ni: 10-14% | Mo: 2-3% | Mn ≤2% | Si ≤1%

Why 316L vs. 316: Low carbon (<0.03%) prevents sensitization (carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding/heat exposure)

Mechanical Properties (Solution Annealed per ASTM A240):

  • Tensile: 520-670 MPa | Yield: 205-310 MPa | Elongation: ≥40%
  • Hardness: HRB 70-90 (annealed), can cold-work to HRB 95+

Corrosion Mechanisms Explained:

  • Mo (2-3%) addition: Prevents pitting in chloride environments (seawater, de-icing salts)
  • Passive CrOlayer: Self-healing oxide film (2-10 nm thickness)
  • Crevice corrosion resistance: 5-10× better than 304 in occluded areas

Applications: Offshore wind fasteners, marine hardware, EV battery packs (10-15 year coastal exposure)

Processing: Cold heading (50-300 pcs/min), passivation (ASTM A967 citric acid), electropolishing (Ra 0.1-0.3μm)

2.2  Duplex 2205 (Austenite + Ferrite Structure)

Key Advantage: 2× yield strength of 316L (450-550 MPa vs. 205-310 MPa) at comparable corrosion resistance

Mechanical Properties (ASTM A182 F51):

  • Tensile: 620-880 MPa | Yield: 450-550 MPa | PREN: 35 (vs. 24 for 316L)

Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) Resistance: Superior to 300-series austenitic (critical for marine platforms under tensile stress)

Applications: Offshore platforms, desalination plants, chemical tankers

Anodizing Performance (Type III Hard Anodize per MIL-A-8625):

  • Coating: 50-75μm Al₂O₃ceramic layer | Hardness: 350-450 HV (comparable to tool steel)
  • Salt spray: 3,000+ hours | Colors: Black, blue, red, gold (organic dye, UV stable 3-5 years)

Max Torque Limitation: 30-50 Nm (M10 size) – suitable for decorative/moderate loads only

Tier 4: Titanium Alloys (Aerospace Premium)

Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5 per ASTM B348)

Chemical Composition:

Al: 5.5-6.75% | V: 3.5-4.5% | Fe ≤0.30% | O ≤0.20% | C ≤0.08%

N ≤0.05% | H ≤0.015% | Ti: Balance (~90%)

Mechanical Properties (Annealed per AMS 4928):

  • Tensile: 900-950 MPa | Yield: 830-880 MPa | Density: 4.43 g/cm³ (43% lighter than steel)
  • Hardness: HRC 33-39 | Elongation: 10-14%
  • Strength-to-Weight Ratio: 203,000 (highest of common structural metals)

Temperature Performance:

  • Service: -200°C to +600°C continuous | Melting point: 1,660°C
  • Strength @ 400°C: 750+ MPa (steel drops to 400-500 MPa)

Corrosion Immunity: Passive TiO₂ layer (2-7 nm, self-healing) → infinite salt spray resistance

Processing Challenges Solved:

  • Low thermal conductivity (16 W/mK): High-pressure coolant 70-100 bar
  • Tool wear: PVD-coated carbide (TiAlN), 40-60 m/min speeds, 200-500 parts/insert
  • Thread: Milling only (rolling causes galling) | Tolerance: ±02mm pitch diameter, Class 6g

Weight Savings Example: M8×25mm bolt: Ti 4.5g vs. Steel 8.0g = 540g savings per 40-bolt engine kit

Applications: Racing engine bays, aerospace fasteners, premium builds

Tier 5: Nickel Superalloys (Extreme Environments)

Ti: 0.65-1.15% | Al: 0.20-0.80% | Co ≤1% | C ≤0.08%

Mechanical Properties (Solution + Aged per ASTM B637):

  • Room temp: Tensile 1,275-1,380 MPa | Yield 1,035-1,240 MPa | HRC 36-43
  • @ 650°C: Tensile >900 MPa (steel <200 MPa at this temperature)
  • Oxidation limit: 980°C | Creep resistance: Dimensional stability under load at 700°C

High-Temperature Strength Retention:

Temp (°C)  | Inconel 718 Tensile | 42CrMo4 Tensile | Advantage

20         | 1,350 MPa          | 1,100 MPa       | Baseline

400        | 1,200 MPa          | 600 MPa         | +100%

650        | 950 MPa            | 180 MPa         | +428%

Applications: Turbo mounting bolts (800-1,000°C exhaust gas), jet engines, industrial gas turbines

Stock Availability: Inconel 718 bar stock (Ø8-50mm) maintained for 1-2 week rapid prototyping (vs. 4-6 week procurement)
